NBA Legend, Shaquille O’Neal requests the current NBA season be called off due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The current season was put on hold earlier in March, with five regular-season games and two months of playoffs left.
Four-time NBA Champion, Shaquille O’Neal, 48, who currently works as a TV pundit, requested everybody to go home, got healthy, and came back next year. He said: “To try and come back now and do a rush playoff as a player? There’s going to be an asterisk on any team who wins this year.”
O’Neal also said: “What if a team that’s not really in the mix of things, all of a sudden wins with a new playoff format? Nobody is going to respect that. So, scrap it. Worry about the safety of the fans and the people, let everyone come back next year.”
It is recorded, that the United States of America currently has the highest number of Coronavirus cases in the world, with over 80,000 deaths and approximately 1.4million people infected.
With this information, a layout plan has been suggested by the NBA to allow teams to gather in a single area, such as The Bahamas, Disney World, or Las Vegas. NBA players would be housed in a secured area, with testing, to check for the virus. But Michele Roberts, The National Basketball Association Executive, said this option feels like incarceration.
Speaking to USA Today, O’Neal said: “I understand how the players feel, I really do. I’m willing to wait, however long it takes to get us back to 100%.”
Furthermore, he said: “After the game, you’ve got to go home, all it takes is one person, what if one person gets sick? Then we start from the beginning again.”
Shaquille O’Neal won NBA titles with the Los Angeles (LA) Lakers, from 2000 to 2002, as well as with The Miami Heat in 2006.
