Odion Ighalo looks set to leave Manchester United this week as his loan spell comes to an end, with parent club Shanghai Shenhua keen to have the striker back as the Chinese Super League plans to resume.
Ighalo has been a hit at Old Trafford since signing a loan deal on the final day of the January transfer window, scoring four times in eight games for his boyhood club. He was signed on deadline day as United desperately needed a striker to stand in for Marcus Rashford who picked up an injury.
Currently, his loan spell looks set to end after just eight appearances, with his initial deal only penned until May 31, 2020. However, Manchester United’s season now extends well beyond the agreed time as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic that has caused a suspension to the league season, with United not playing since their 5-0 victory over LASK Linz earlier in March.
Manchester United still has nine Premier League games to play and remain in the Europa League and the FA Cup. It is their intention to keep Odion Ighalo until the end of this season and has held discussions with Shanghai Shenhua about extending the loan deal until the end of the current campaign.
Furthermore, since the Chinese authorities are hopeful of beginning the Chinese Super League season in late June or early July at most, Ighalo’s club insists on having him back on the team as agreed with Manchester United.
Ighalo’s impact at Manchester United exceeded expectations, with goals in all his starts for the club, but with Rashford now fit and available again, United seem relaxed about the possibility of losing Ighalo at the end of this week.
