NASA has announced the release of open-source instructions for a 3D-printed necklace which is designed to help people stop touching their faces. Experts have warned repeatedly that people stop touching their faces with their fingers to limit their chances of being infected with COVID-19.

Despite the warning, almost everyone will admit that it’s not usually easy to avoid touching any part of our faces. Nasa thought right.

Looking at a better way for people to be reminded to stop touching their faces, three engineers at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Lab-created Pulse. The new technology necklace has a proximity sensor with a 12-inch range and a coin vibration motor, which activates when you forget and move your hand towards your head. As your fingers move closer to your face, the more intense the vibrations become.

“The objective of Pulse is to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which can be transmitted if an individual touches an infected surface with their hand and then touches either their eyes, nose or mouth,” NASA said.

You can download the list of parts you need, CAD designs to 3D print the case, and directions on how to make the necklace for free. NASA said it designed Pulse to be affordable and easy to assemble together.

NASA further said that Pulse isn’t designed to replace masks or respirators. Rather it’s meant to work with other coronavirus-prevention measures, such as maintaining distance from other people and thoroughly washing your hands. It could be a perfect way to go for those who just can’t stop scratching their noses.
