The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed that there will be no anointed candidates for the upcoming Legislative by-election scheduled to take place on September 3.
The poll will take place to select aspirants who will be contesting for the October 31, concurrent legislative by-elections arranged to take place in certain constituencies across eight states of the federation. The states consist of Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Imo, Lagos, Plateau, Zamfara, and Kogi.
Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Yekini Nabena disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, in Abuja. He further stated that the APC had cleared all candidates to contest the upcoming primary poll after appropriate selection.
“There are no preferred, pre-determined, or anointed aspirants,” he said. The secretary also added that the clarification became essential after a statement by an APC chieftain, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla.
The chieftain was reported to have said the party’s leadership was trying to impose a prearranged aspirant on the people in the upcoming Cross River North Senatorial District by-election.
Furthermore, Nabena promised that the committee led by the APC caretaker, Gov. Mai Mala was already moving in a different and advanced direction where things were done appropriately and internal democracy was the norm.
He added that the party would carry on offering candidates a level playing field, noting that only those with good records and mostly voted will be presented as APC candidates in all polls.
