Mr Campbell who took to his Twitter account after learning of the arrest of Kanu cautioned the Nigerian government led by Gen. Buhari to handle Kanu’s trial with care as mismanaging the case will have an adverse effect.

“Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was apprehended abroad on June 27 and has been returned to Nigeria for trial. If the government botches Kanu’s trial, it risks further inflaming separatism,” Ambassador Campbell wrote.

Nnamdi Kanu was picked up on Sunday and repatriated to Nigeria according to the Attorney General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami who spoke to newsmen in the wake of the event.

Malami during his address concealed the exact location where the IPOB leader was picked up, a decision Nigerians have faulted arguing that the government must be open to Nigerians in handling such matters, not to dish out only whatever information they like.

After returning to Nigeria, Kanu who was hooded was made to appear before Justice Binta Nyako-led Abuja Federal High Court to continue trial as alleged.

Justice Nyako remanded Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, while adjourning the case.
