The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, read a letter at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday. The letter revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to confirm Professor Jumai Audi as the Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.
The law makers also confirmed three other persons as the regional commission of the agency, namely Ebele Chima as the Commissioner of South East, Bassey Abia as the Commissioner of the South-South, and Mohammad Ibraheem as the Commissioner of the South-West.
The letter reads in this order “In compliance with the provision of Section 2(2) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act No.7 of 1999, I wrote to forward to the Senate for confirmation the under-listed (4) names of nominees as Chairman and full-time members of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.”
In addition, Buhari asked for the confirmation of Diana Okonta of the South-South and Ya’ana Talib Yaro of the North-East as Non-Executive Directors of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
The President’s request for the confirmation of the NDIC nominees has to lead the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi to move a motion for the upper chamber to expedite action on Buhari’s request.
The Senate President has asked for the process to be fast-tracked as they have to allow the Senate Committees to screen the nominees.
The confirmation request of the NCID nominees has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Financial Institutions. The Senate has given the committee two weeks to report back to them.
